Fasting For Weight Loss

Is Fasting Unhealthy?

The web and so many other sources are all full of information about weight loss diets - some of it helpful - some of it totally useless, not to mention down right dangerous.

Diet fads abound everywhere, but the sad truth is that these fad diets and trends are, for the most part, just a means to generate more money for the person(s) pushing the information or products. However, fasting for weight loss is one of the most primitive and old fashioned ways to lose weight, and it doesn't cost you a thing.

Although not considered the healthiest practice for weight loss by many, fast diets are still very effective and can actually be a safe way to lose weight and cleanse your body. It's important, of course, to consult with your personal physician before starting a fast diet, but once he determines you are healthy enough, you'll be good to go.

What is A Fasting Diet?

Simply stated, fasting is abstinence from some (or all) food or drink for a certain period of time. Take note that fasting does not necessarily mean completely abstaining from eating altogether.

This practice is much more dangerous and should be avoided except under the care of a doctor. In order for fasting to work, it is best to first determine what your goals are.

For optimum results while you are following your fast diet, you must apply a strict eating regimen along with an exercise plan. Otherwise, it could be useless. As soon as you have determined your goals, it is now time to apply the principle of fasting in your daily routine.

How To Fast

For beginners, fasting should be done gradually. It is dangerous and even harmful for someone to completely dive into fasting. With that said, it is also important to still have enough nutrients so as not to starve yourself. A lot of people believe in intensely undergoing such routines. This route is not only counter-productive, it is also detrimental.

When people go on an all-out 'no eating' plan, which is essentially a water fast, this allows them to go into a state of shock. Their bodies subsequently go into a 'starvation mode', turning to their muscles and their insides for food. Once this happens, your body will slow down, regress, and will eventually breakdown if the plan is followed long enough.

Furthermore, when someone refrains from eating, they actually tend to burn fewer calories than if they were eating. This is because the body signals that there is a deficiency of food, and therefore should conserve energy in order to survive. A very bad decision indeed.

The correct way to fast is to eat only one type of food group - in moderation. Eating up to six times a day would further speed up the metabolism, and the addition of exercise to the plan would be even more advantageous.

Remember that in order to lose weight fast, you would need to stick to the fast diet that you have chosen to follow, and exercise as well. Fasting for weight loss can be done in a safe manner, but do your research and make sure you are healthy enough to carry it out before you begin.
